At Level 1 of the AI Adoption Maturity Ladder, an organization knows AI matters, but it doesn’t yet have a shared approach.
That’s not failure. In many cases, it’s a normal starting point.
The risk is what happens next.
This is the stage where leaders feel pressure to act, employees start experimenting on their own, vendors start pushing tools, and the organization may confuse movement with progress. In my mind, Level 1 is where companies need to be especially careful because the wrong first move can create confusion, risk, and false confidence.
There are three traps I see organizations falling into at this stage.
